Ⅰ. 기사 레몽은 푸아투 백작의 절친한 친구였습니다. 한 번은 둘이 함께 멧돼지 사냥을 나섰는데, 그만 푸아투 백작이 성난 멧돼지에게 공격당해 말에서 떨어지고 말았습니다. 용감한 레몽은 한달음에 달려가 친구를 구하기 위해 성난 짐승을 죽이려 하였습니다. 하지만 그의 공격은 멧돼지의 등에 맞고 튕겨 나가 그만 그의 친구를 죽이고 말았습니다. 무슨 짓을 해버렸는지 깨달은 레몽은 겁에 질려 숲속으로 달아났습니다. 그는 친구의 죽음에 슬퍼하며 울었죠. 자기가 고대의 예언에 따라 사악한 마음을 통해 저지르게 된 일이라는 사실을 알지 못한 채요. 목이 말랐던 그는 물을 마시고 휴식을 취하기 위해 숲속의 호숫가에 무릎을 굽혀 앉았습니다. 그리고 거기서 호숫가에 앉아있는 세상에서 가장 아름다운 여인을 보게 되었습니다. 여인은 바로 레몽에게로 다가와 기사가 이 깊은 숲속에서 찾는 것이 무엇이며 왜 이리 슬퍼하고 있는지 물었습니다. 그녀의 아름다움에 매료되어 긴장이 풀린 레몽은 사랑에 빠져 그녀에게 불운한 사건의 전말을 모두 이야기해주었습니다. 그리고 그는 바로 여인에게 청혼하였고 멜리진이라 하는 이 여인은 그의 청혼을 받아들였지만, 결혼한 후 매주 토요일엔 자신의 방에 들어오지 말 것이며 그날만은 자신을 가만히 내버려 둘 것을 신신당부하였습니다.

그 순간 이후 기사는 그의 신부와 함께 귀환하여 행운만을 맞이하였습니다. 그는 가문의 숙적들을 모두 패배시키고 오명을 씻어냈으며 빼앗겼던 가문의 많은 성과 영지들을 되찾아 자신과 가문의 명성을 퍼트렸습니다. 그의 용맹함과 업적에 감명받은 영주는 그에게 원하는 것이 있는지 물었습니다. 기사는 사슴 가죽 안에 들어갈 만큼의 영지를 하사받고 싶다고 하였습니다. 영주는 웃으며 흔쾌히 그의 청을 승낙하였습니다. 멜리진이 그에게 사슴 가죽을 길게 잘라 줄로 만들라 조언해준 사실을 알지 못한 채 말이죠. 그녀는 마법으로 그 줄을 더 늘려 많은 영지를 받아내고 그 영지 한가운데 샘이 솟게 하여 땅에 물을 주고 매년 풍작을 이룰 수 있도록 하였습니다. 멜리진은 또 다른 마법으로 그녀와 레몽의 집인 위대한 뤼지냥 성을 축조하였습니다.

Knight Raymond was a good friend of the Count of Poitiers. Once they went together to hunt wild pigs, but the Count of Poitiers was attacked by a raging boar and knocked from his horse. Brave Raymond rushed to save his friends and tried to kill the enraged beast, but his blow glanced off its back and instead of taking down the creature, he killed his friend with one blow. Aghast at his deed, Raymond fled deep into the forest, where he grieved over the death of his friend, little knowing that he had acted according to an ancient prophesy, and through an evil heart. Thirsty, he knelt down by a pool in the woods to take a drink and rest a while, whereupon he saw a most beautiful maiden sitting by the pool. She came to him at once and asked what a knight was seeking so deep in the woods and why he was so sad. Disarmed by her beaut, Raymond fell in love with the girl and told her the whole story of his misfortune. Then right away he asked for he hand in marriage and the maiden, who was called Melusine accepted his offer, but she warned him that her husband must never enter her chamber on a Saturday and must leave her alone all day.

From the moment that the knight returned from the forest with his bride, he met with only good fortune. He defeated all the old rivals of his family, put to rights all wrongs against them and got back many castles and estates that others had stolen from his glorious family, thereby exalting his own good name and that of his line. Raymond served his liege so bravely that the lord asked him what he would like to have for his services.

Whereupon the knight replied that he wished to have in freehold as much land as would fit within the skin of one stag. His liege lord laughed and gladly agreed, little knowing that Melusine had advised him to cut the skin of a stag into thin ribbons and wave a long rope from them. This she then made even longer by a magic spell, so that it would hold an even greater tract of land. Melusine made a spring rise up in the middle of this land to water the earth and ensure a good harvest every year. By other spells, Melusine erected the great Castle Lusignan, where she and Raymond made their home.

Ⅱ. 기사 레몽과 멜리진은 많은 아이를 낳아 행복한 가정을 꾸려 살아가고 있었습니다. 아이들은 모두 몸에 가문의 표시가 새겨졌는데 그들은 모두 나중에 용감한 기사와 훌륭한 왕으로 자랐습니다. 각설하고 본론으로 돌아와, 레몽은 행복한 나날은 보내던 중 멜리진에 왜 토요일엔 그녀의 방에만 있어야 하는지 또 그녀가 거기서 무엇을 하는지 점점 궁금증에 사로잡히기 시작하였습니다. 그리하여 어느 토요일 레몽은 숨어 그녀가 방으로 들어오기를 기다렸습니다. 그리고 단검으로 문에 구멍을 뚫어 방안을 훔쳐보았습니다. 방안의 풍경은 충격적이었습니다. 멜리진은 물이 담겨있는 커다란 욕조 안에 기대 누워 있었지만, 그녀의 허리 밑으로는 사람의 다리가 아닌 해룡의 바늘 덮인 꼬리가 있었습니다. 두려움이 그의 심장을 사로잡았고 깜짝 놀란 레몽은 자기도 모르게 비명을 내뱉었습니다. 그의 비명을 들은 멜리진은 자신의 남편이 약속을 저버렸다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 그녀는 비통한 슬픔에 빠져 용으로 변신하여 창문 밖으로 날아가 사라졌습니다. 그 이후로 레몽은 다시는 자신의 아내를 보지 못하였죠.

아주 오랜 시간 후까지 말이에요. 멜리진은 어느 날 레몽에게 다시 나타나 그가 사흘 후에 죽을 것을 알려주었습니다. 그리고 사흘이 지나자 레몽은 세상을 떠났습니다. 그날 이후로 저주받은 멜리진은 몰래 그녀의 후손들을 보호해주었고 그들이 죽기 사흘 전에 앞에 나타나 미리 죽음을 알려주게 되었습니다.

미리 말했듯이, 많은 영명 높은 가문들이 레몽과 멜리진의 핏줄로부터 유래하였는데 그중 가장 명성 높고 존경받으며 가장 중요한 가문이 보헤미아의 왕 벤체슬라스와 헝가리의 왕 지기스문트의 가문인 룩셈부르크가 입니다. 이것이 이 가문의 기사들이 종종 용 문양의 장식을 지니고 토너먼트를 참가하는 이유이고요. 룩셈부르크가의 인물은 약간일지라도 용의 피가 흐르므로 성격이 불같고 싸우길 좋아하며 다혈질적입니다. 그러므로 그들을 화나게 하거나 그들과 분쟁하거나 그들의 의견에 반대하는 것은 신중하지 못한 일입니다.

Knight Raymond and Melusine lived happily and had many children together, all of whom were marked by the mark of the family, though all became brave knights and wise rulers. In time, though, Raymond began to be consumed by curiosity as to what his wife was doing alone in her chambers on Saturday and why only she could be there on that day. So one Saturday he hid and waited for his wife to come to her chambers. With his knife he cut a slit in the door through which he could see inside. And what he spied there horrified him. In her room was a big tub of water in which Melusine reclined, but from the wait down she had the body of a scaly creature - a serpent! Fright gripped his heart and he called out in surprise. At which Melusine realised that her husband had betrayed him [sic] promise to her. She was seized by terrible sadness, turned into a dragon and flew out the window. And from that moment Raymond never saw his wife again...

Until many, many years later, she appeared to him to tell him he would die in three days time. And so it came to pass, and Raymond died. From that day forth cursed Melusine secretly guards the lives of all the descendants of her line, and appears to them three days before their death to foretell it.

As was foretold, many glorious princely families descended from the line of Raymond and Melusine. Among the most renowned, respected and foremost of them is the Luxembourg family, including Wenceslas IV, King of Bohemia, and his brother Sigismund, King of Hungary. That is why the knights of this clan often carry in tournaments an ornament in the form of a dragon, and because they themselves have a little dragon's blood in them, it is not prudent to anger them or enter into conflict with them or disagree with them, because their lineage makes them quick-tempered, quarrelsome and hot-blooded.
