[레드 데드 리뎀션2] 아서 모건의 '블랙워터' 일지

1. 새로운 일지 샀다. 지난번 일지는 저번 화재 때 탔다. 몇 달 전이었나, 뭐 그랬다.

 

지난 몇 달은 별로 글을 쓰지도 그림도 안 그렸다. 그렇지만 나도 모르게 아쉬웠는지 가게에 갔을 때 결국 이렇게 새 일지를 샀다.

 

북쪽에서 벌어진 일과 불 이후 북부 그리즐리즈에서 아래로 가면서 황야에서 살았다. 가장 추웠던 겨울에는 주로 산 서쪽에 있는 작은 언덕에서 꼼짝 않고 지냈다. 먹을 것도 쉽게 구했고 살기도 괜찮았다.

 

 

I bought this new journal, after the last one got destroyed in that fire all those months ago, whenever it was.

Haven't written or drawn much in the past few months, but I was missing it more than I thought I would, and finally near a store, so here I am, I guess.

After all that business up North and the fire, we spent a few months in the wilderness, traveling down from the Northern Grizzlies, stuck mostly in the western foothills of the mountains during the worst of the winter. Food was easy to find and life was good.

 

 

2. 더치가 관심이 있던 땅에 대한 이야기를 들어 가봤지만 더치가 원하는 것과는 좀 달랐다. 아니면 더치가 보안관이 자기를 쳐다보고 있고 누가 자기 정체를 안다고 겁을 먹었던가 그랬다. 땅은 결국 안 샀고 우리는 여전히 돌아다닌다.

 

그리즐리즈에서 새로운 사람을 두 명 받아들였다.

 

 

Dutch had a lead for some land we were going to buy, but the land did not match up to his criteria, or he got spooked we were being watched by the law and that somebody knew who he was, and we never bought it and we are wandering still.

 

We picked up a couple of new folk from the Grizzlies.

 

 

3. 제니는 어리고 착한 여자아이다. 길가에 버려져 있던 아이였는데 우리가 구했다. 마이카는 더치가 어느 바에서 만난 무법자다. 금방 화내고 시비 걸고 자기 생각 밖에 안하는데, 더치가 마음에 들어한다. 호제아와 나는 별로다. 두고 봐야 할 것 같다.

 

드디어 황야에서 나와 블랙워터 바깥에 숨어들었다. 가끔 마을에 머무르며 기회를 찾아다닌다.

 

 

Jenny, a sweet young girl we met abandoned on the roadside, and Micah - an outlaw Dutch met in a bar someplace. Dutch seems very taken with Micah, who is pretty hot-headed, argumentative and full of himself. Hosea and I are less sure. Guess we shall see.

 

Eventually, we came out of the wilderness and are now holed up outside of Blackwater, although sometimes I stay in town, hunting for opportunities.

 

 

4. 뭔가 큰 건을 잡은 것 같다. 우리는 돈도 많고 천천히 길고 복잡한 길을 따라왔기 때문에 아무도 남쪽이나 동쪽으로 우리를 쫓아오거나 우리가 어디로 향하는지 알아내지 못했을거다.

 

캘리포니아로 갈까 생각해봤지만 더치와 호제아가 우리를 블랙워터로 이끌었다.

 

 

I might be on to something. We got plenty of money, and the trail we took was so tortuous and slow nobody could have followed us south and east, or figured out where we was heading.

 

We was thinking about California, but then Dutch and Hosea brought us down to Blackwater.

 

 

5. 듣자 하니 블랙워터는 마지막으로 봤을 때보다 훨씬 발전했다고 한다. 나에겐 교역소보다 조금 큰 정도라고 그랬는데,

 

아주 빠르게 성장해 지금은 거의 작은 도시 정도가 됐다. 마을엔 부패가 가득하지만 확실히 돈이 넘쳐난다.

 

텐트 생활을 오래 하고 나면 가끔 침대에서 자고 더 문명인 같은 생활을 하는 게 무척 좋다. 마을에서 이렇게 가까이 지내는 건 마음에 안 들지만.

 

 

Blackwater has apparently grown a whole lot since any of them was last here - I was told to expect little more than a trading post.

 

But the place is growing fast, and it's almost a small city. The town seems to be riddled with corruption, but there's certainly plenty of money here.

 

It's good to be sleeping in a bed from time to time and living a more civilized life after so long under canvas, but I do not particularly like being this near to a town.

 

 

6. 우리는 주로 마을 바깥에서 야영하면서 이곳에서 생활하고 있다. 이런 걸 등잔 밑에 숨었다고 하던가, 하여튼. 지내기는 편하다.

 

아비게일과 마스턴이 계속해서 다툰다. 마스턴이 돌아온 이유가 정확히 무엇인지 궁금하다. 마스턴이 잭한테 아버지가 되어주고 싶은지 아닌지 마음을 못 정하는 것 같다.

 

다투는 소리만 들어도 피곤하다. 트렐러니 같은 남자의 소문을 들었는데, 녀석을 못 본 지 몇 달이나 됐다.

 

 

We are living here, camping outside town mostly, hidden in plain sight, I guess. Life seems pretty easy.

 

Abigail and Marston keep arguing. I wonder why exactly he came back. He cannot seem to decide if he wants to be a father to that boy of his or not.

 

The arguing is exhausting. I heard talk of a man sounded like Trelawny, but we haven't seen him for many months.

 

 

7. 호제아와 내가 큰 건을 잡았다. 아주 큰 건이다. 호제아가 찾아낸 부동산 사기를 치면 엄청난 돈이 굴어들어온다는 것 같다. 난 아직 잘 모르겠다. 사기꾼들을 강도질하다니, 아주 완벽한 범죄다. 매우 조심스럽게 행동하고 있다.

 

호제아와 다시 일하니까 아주 즐겁다. 호제아는 헛소리의 제왕이다. 남는 건 없어도 충분히 즐거운 시간을 보내고 있다.

 

 

Hosea and I are onto something. Something pretty big - might be a lot of cash coming in to do with a real estate scam Hosea thinks he may have discovered. I am not sure yet. The perfect crime, we think - one where we rob crooks. We are being real careful.

 

It's fun working with Hosea again. The man is an artist of nonsense. Even if nothing comes of it, we are having an amusing enough time.

 

 

8. 다시 사기를 치려니 아주 즐겁다. 호제아는 타고난 사기꾼이다. 마을에 남아있으면 과도하게 시선을 끌까 봐 걱정하면서 불안해하고 있다.

 

더치도 큰 건을 잡았다면서 큰소리를 치며 은행 돈이 보트를 통해 들어온다는 사실을 알려줬다. 그래서 우린 지금 두 건을 동시에 작업하면서 상황을 지켜보고 있다.

 

계획은 가능하면 서부 사막 지역으로 도망가는 것이다.

 

 

It's good to be running scams again. Hosea is a born huckster. He is getting anxious, worried that by lingering in town, we are going to bring undue attention on ourselves.

 

But Dutch thinks he is also onto something big, his words, not mine, bank money being brought in by boat, apparently, so for now, we are working on both things and seeing what happens.

 

Plan is to flee west into the desert country someplace if we can.

 

 

9. 마이카와 더치가 마을에 있는 페리를 털려고 계획 중이다. 페리에 부자들이 타고 있어 돈이 배를 타고 은행에 들어오는 것과 다름없다고 생각하는 것 같다.

 

난 이번 일에는 참여하지 않는다. 호제아와 나는 우리 일을 처리하느라 바쁜데, 내가 보기엔 아주 잘 끝날 것 같다. 더치는 갱이 단합해 있어서 모든 게 잘 풀릴 거라고 확신에 차있다.

 

 

Micah and Dutch are planning to rob the ferry in town. They think it's laden with riches - cash coming in for the banks, coming in by boat.

 

For once, I am not getting involved in the job. Hosea and I are too taken up with our business, which I believe could go very well, and Dutch seems confident that with the group assembled, all will be okay.

10. 계획은 우선 다른 녀석들이 일을 끝내고 서부 황야로 도망가는 거다. 호제아와 내가 그 다음 날 사기를 치고 그들과 합류하기로 했다.

 

더치가 기쁘고 들떠 보인다. 캘리포니아 얘기를 다시 했는데, 여기저기 다른 곳에 대해서도 얘기하고 있다.

 

 

Plan is for them to carry out the job, then flee into the wilderness out to the West. The next day, Hosea and I carry out our scam and join them.

 

Dutch seems happy and excited. He's talking again about California, but he's also talking about a lot of other places.
